Hitzhusen believes very strongly in the importance of participatory worship. She is available as a subsitute worship leader or for consultations with congregations on implementing new songs/responses into worship or on re-inventing traditional music. She has 14 years of experience as the Music Director for First Worship, an intergenerational service at the Wellesley Village Congregational Church.
As a prolific composer, Hitzhusen writes in classical, pop, and folk styles. She is especially interested in writing short responses, rounds, and chants that can be easily learned by a group or congregation and is available for commissioned work in both religious and secular settings.
Hitzhusen has been contracted repeatedly to lead music for spiritual retreats, sometimes composing music specifically for these events. She often becomes part of the planning process for the entire retreat, contributing to the format and the rituals that tie everything together.
